We just got back from our Thanksgiving with my mother in law. It was a lovely (if cold, dry, and windy!) visit, but I am glad to be home. There’s just nothing like your own bed, your own space, your own stuff, you know?

But I am super excited that we got sent home with the excellent Thanksgiving dinner leftovers–my MIL made one spectacular turkey, and I’m giddy that we got to bring the spoils home with us.

Hmmm, maybe the use of the word spoils when talking about food isn’t the best?

While we were there, I had to deal with some stuff with Covered CA, health insurance, and proving income. There had been some snafus in the whole process, and I bitched about it on Twitter, and I have to give their social media team props–they were able to get me resolution that multiple calls into the customer service lines hadn’t gotten me. I had someone call me specifically after reviewing our case, giving me the correct information, and giving me direct contact information for the one aspect they couldn’t answer for me. I’m still fairly irritated at some of the nonsense we went through, but again, props to their social team. They reached out to me, and fixed something I hadn’t been able to fix on my own. A+ service, would tweet again.

One bonus of having a light Christmas this year is that I’m almost completely done with all the gift shopping for everyone. I should be able to finish up this week (excluding the last minute food based stocking stuffers), and while I’m not thrilled with the reason WHY, I’m not gonna lie, I’m not sad that I’ll be done soon.

I think I’ve put back on all the weight I lost this summer. I feel like this should make me sadder than it is, but mostly I’m just glad I’m not in the mental place I was then that made me lose all that weight.

If you hear a random meowing sound, I’m pretty sure that’s my cat, meowing about how pissed he is that we left. He’s loud enough that I swear you can hear him several states over.

Can we all get an AMEN that school starts again on Monday? I mean, REALLY.

Tis the season

I keep vacillating between going “oh crap, how on earth is it almost Christmas” and going “oh yay, it’s almost Christmas.” Which kinda sums up the whole year, if I’m honest. Surprise that it’s already so late, along with happiness that it’s almost over.

Anyway, now that thanksgiving is over, it’s officially the Christmas season. This makes me happy, because Christmas is my very favorite holiday. I love the decorations, the music, the gifts, the tree, the lights, all of it. Even when it’s annoying, it’s still my favorite.

But at the same time, this year it makes me a little sad. This year is, by necessity, going to be very light. We’re not able to visit family (and I hate disappointing everyone we can’t see). Santa will, of course, still visit the kid but the rest of us will be a little less popular under the tree. We’re going to have to dial way back on everything, and that just bums me out.

But even still, tonight I’m listening to Christmas music, and thinking about the tree, and decorations and despite the rest of the season being a little less than it normally is, I’m still excited. It’s still my favorite holiday, even if we have to make adjustments to how we do things for this year. Luckily, my favorite parts of the holiday have to do with the feelings and not the stuff. So bring on the Christmas season, limitations or no.

Giving Thanks

This year has been rough for this family. The past 6 months in particular have been probably some of the toughest few months we’ve had together. And honestly, right now, it’s sometimes hard to be thankful, to see past the rough parts, to be grateful instead of frustrated and mad at the situation.

But today I had a wonderful meal with my wonderful family. I got to take a nap curled up with my little boy wrapped in my arms. I laughed and smiled, and even though it’s been a tough year, and even though it’s been filled with challenges, oh, I really am lucky and oh so thankful.

Dryyyyy

by Ginger on November 25, 2015

I grew up in the desert. It was dry and it was hot. Humidity was my nemesis and the phrase “it’s a dry heat” was my mantra.

And then I moved to New York and it was humid and gross a lot of the time. It was rarely dry like I grew up with, and was often swampy in ways I hated. The humidity wasn’t a reason I wanted to leave, but I DID miss the dryness

Then we moved to San Diego. It was sort of a midway point between those two worlds. There are occasional swings that go more humid or more dry, but in general it lives in the middle of those two extremes.

And now, I am fully acclimated to San Diego’s temperate moisture levels. I whine when it gets too humid. I whine when it gets too dry. San Diego has made me the goldilocks of weather-it has to be juuuuust right.

Which is why, when we visit family, my body doesn’t know how to react. But especially when we come to Vegas to see my mother in law. I feel like a dry, desicated husk of a person. My skin dries out and feels like it’s trying to actively separate itself from my body. It’s so dryyyyyyyyyyyy.

And it just makes me wonder, how the hell did I live like this for the first 22 years of my life?

I surely don’t know anymore, so all I can say is please pass the lotion.

Car dog

You know how you see dogs in the car, head out the window, pure joy on their faces?

Yeah, that’s not my dog.

We drove with her to Vegas to my MIL’s today, and I swear she shook the entire time. She doesn’t like putting her head out the window. She HATES if there are bumps in the road, or if you have to brake suddenly. She just doesn’t really like anything about the car.

We knew she didn’t love short trips, but we had sort of wondered if she’d get more interested in the car if there wasn’t a vet on the other end of the trip. Apparently that’s a big fat nope.

But at least she should sleep amazing tonight after being on edge all day?
