So, I’ve…kind of become a tad obsessed with makeup lately. I don’t really know what’s come over me, but I’m having SO much fun with all my new pretty makeup. I don’t know what to do with it half the time, but I’m learning, and it’s fun to change my look based on my mood.
So this week, I’m starting Makeup Mondays with one of my smaller product groups: mascara. I’m pretty picky about mascara. Or, rather, my eyes and contacts are pretty picky about mascara. I mean, I want it to not clump, and not look like I’m wearing a tarantula on my face, and not slide off my eyes onto my cheeks, and not flake off. But I also have to have stuff that doesn’t make my eyes itch or burn or rebel against having mascara on.
Right now, these are all my mascaras:
From top to bottom: 1.Almay one coat triple effect 2.Almay intense i-color 3.Urban Decay Supercurl Curling Mascara 4. Covergirl Clump Crusher 5. MAC Extended Play Lash
1.Almay one coat triple effect. I’ve had this for a while, and it’s alright. Doesn’t bother my eyes, so that’s good, and it looks nice, but it seems to slide off my lashes and onto my cheeks pretty quickly. I end up looking like a raccoon somewhere around 11 am, and that just is not great for me. Other people don’t seem to have this problem though, so YMMV.
2. Almay intese i-color. This one I bought on a whim. It’s not the best around as far as lash definition goes, but it’s purple! A really subtle greyish purple. So I keep it around for funsies.
3. Urban Decay Supercurl Curling Mascara. This is probably my current favorite. I was sent this as a free gift with another Urban Decay purchase–I never would have picked this on my own as I had just recently bought myself the MAC and also, I rarely buy curling mascaras–my lashes are decently curled as is, IMO. BUT, I must say I love this stuff. It goes on easy, doesn’t give me raccoon eyes, and looks very defined. It also has a benefit of not feeling all plastic-y and hard, and it comes off fairly easily. So, win all around.
OMG do you know how hard it is to take pictures of your own eyes? Beauty bloggers, I have nothing but mad props for you. This is not my best application, as you can tell from how sparse some of my lashes look. That’s totally user error, not product failure.
4. Cover Girl Clump Crusher. This is apparently the new hot store brand. I feel like I hear everyone rave about this stuff, so I had to check it out. Here are the things I really liked about it: a)it definitely doesn’t clump on me. b)It gives me nicely defined lashes, without looking crazy made up. c)it’s easy to apply. d)it’s a nice, “natural” look, really nice for everyday. e)it feels kind of soft to the touch. But there are some things I don’t love as much: a)there is a little bit of migration off my lashes to under my eyes. It’s not terrible, but it is there. b)it seems to lengthen nicely, but doesn’t really add much in the way of volume. That’s not the end of the world for me, but I do like when I get both. All in all, it’s a decent every day mascara for me, but not my be all end all. (FWIW, I saw a 4 or 5 pack of these at Costco the other day. If this one is your jam, it’s a good deal.).
One eye with, one eye without.
5. MAC Extended Play Lash. I got this with a gift card, and in a lot of ways I really love it. It definitely gives me the appearance of longer lashes, and it definitely lasts all day with no migration. It does feel kind of plastic/hard on my lashes, which I could do without, but I think the look is worth it. It is one of the smallest brushes I’ve ever used (I tried to get a picture, but my camera wouldn’t focus), which took some getting used to, but now that I have it down, I like the control that the small brush gives me.
One eye with, one eye without. I look crosseyed.
Sometimes, I’ll combine the MAC and the Clump Crusher together, just for fun–I feel like it gives me the benefits of the no-clumps, with the drama of the MAC, but maybe I’m delusional.
So, those are my mascaras. I CLEARLY don’t need any more any time soon, but if you have one you love love love, I’ve (of course) got a list going of the next ones to buy…
Now! Head on over to Maria Melee and check out the other Makeup Monday posts! Also, check out #MakeupMonday on Twitter.
Oh I love this! I have never owned more than 2 mascaras and I rarely stay loyal to one brand but I’ve been really into Blinc. (I wear contacts too.) My eyelashes are really long so when I use the really volumizing stuff I feel like WHOA ALL THE GIANT CRAZY MAKEUP. But this post totally made me want to experiment.
I keep hearing about Blinc lately. I may have to add that one to the list…
I might need to give the MAC a try. I have never found a mascara that didn’t give me raccoon eyes, even when others swear it won’t. I’m not giving up though. There’s gotta be one out there for me 🙂
You know, I think Lisa from http://pixelsandplaygrounds.net/ was talking about a trick with powdering your lashes to help keep the mascara in place rather than on your eyes. I may have to try that with those Almay ones…
Hmmmm, I’m thinking about that Urban Decay now.
And how weird is it that one-eye-with and one-eye-without can look so different? I always look like one eye is almost swollen shut. It’s amazing what mascara does.
Dior Diorshow Blackout mascara, not the waterproof one.
I tried everything I could get my hands on. Loved this one, thought $25 was beyond ridiculous. Been wearing it non-stop for 3 years and still love it. Will economize somewhere else.
I’ve heard so many good things about the Dior stuff. That’s definitely going to be on my next list!
Cover Girl Lash Blast (orange tube) is my fall back. About every other tube, I buy something different. I’m intrigued by the Urban Decay. In the past, I’ve had success with Loreal & Benefit. I’ve never coughed up the dough for Dior though friends swear by it. I tried Maybelline Falsies, but hated it. I did get a sample of Chantecaille once & it blew my mind, but it’s $42.
Great post!
$42? For that price, I better look like I came off the pages of a magazine.
Mascara is the one thing I will almost always put on, even when the rest of me is in full hot-wreck mode. I am in love with how the MAC one looks. I will put it on my wish-list…a nice treat for mummy now and then is a great idea.
I am a life-long (and by that I mean for as long as my mama has let me wear it) fan of Maybelline Great Lash in the pink and green bottle. I’ve yet to find one I like better at any price!
