Reads From Around the Web

in Blogging & Social Media

I was supposed to be in New York for an 8 day business trip right now, but instead I pulled/tweaked/pinched something in my neck and so I get to stay at home instead. I’m about 15% sad, mostly because I’m sad not to get to see the folks I had planned to see, but I’m also 85% happy to not be away for 8 days. Anyone who tells you business travel is exciting is either lying or in a WAY different position than me.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a RFATW so I may be rusty, but I’ve got a lot of links to share, so let’s get to it!

Over at Princess Nebraska, Proud is a post that mirrors how I WANT to feel about eating better and taking care of myself. How I WANT to view myself, weight loss or no. It’s a great motivator for me, and maybe it will be for you too.

Over at Reading (with Chickens), Shalini gives us A Brief Rant About Blog Comments. I’ll be honest, I’ve never really done the “you comment on mine, so I’ll comment on yours” thing, because as Shalini points out, it’s not genuine. One of the things I love about blogging is community, and conversation, absolutely. But comments should be  just that, conversation. NOT obligation.

Over at Helen Jane, Know what you want  is a post that I’m still trying to figure out what to do with. I have a hard time figuring out what it is that I want sometimes (lots of times), and I like the approach she takes in trying to find that. I really liked the idea of making a point to figure out what you DON’T want, just as much as what you DO. Now to just…figure it out.

Over at Wandering Scientist, Cloud talks about Some Thoughts on Privilege. I chewed on this post for a while (and Scalzi’s post on Straight White Male: The Lowest Difficulty Setting There Is was an equally good one to chew over), and every time I reread it, I find something good to think about. There are so many places where the word privilege is thrown around–as both a positive and a negative–and I love reading pieces that challenge what that means & doesn’t in the real world.

A guest post on Scalzi’s Whatever (I think Cloud may have linked me to this one too), The Big Idea: Michelle Sagara was a post that made me cry, and then made me hope and pray that I’m able to raise Jackson to be the kind of kid that the girls Michelle writes about are. I will consider myself a rock star parent if that happens.

And finally, over at The Frog & Snail Society, the best to-do-list of all time. Seriously, this should just be my life list.

That’s enough for this week folks. Enjoy!

I’m with you both on the commenting issue! I get so many comments on my blog that are obviously just bait to get me to check out the person’s blog. The worst is when they don’t try to hide it though, and just flat out say “Hey I’m following you now, you should follow me back!” Except, what if you aren’t really the kind of blogger I find interesting? I’m not going to subscribe and comment on all your posts when I don’t relate to what you’re posting. I’m just glad there are other people out there who “get it”!

Thanks for including me in such awesome company!

I also don’t do the “I comment on/read your blog because you comment on mine” thing. And I don’t even always answer comments- I only comment back if I actually have something to say. Shalini’s post is awesome. Blogging is my HOBBY. I only do things I want to do. I have a JOB, and for that I do things I “should” do. I refuse to have my hobby add stress to my life.

And I also really liked the first post you linked to. I’m struggling to figure out what to do with the fact that I’m about 10 lbs heavier than I should be/want to be. My clothes don’t fit right, but I can squeeze into them. So… should I go buy new clothes? Or redouble my efforts to lose weight? Or both? Gah. I’m not usually so indecisive!

Aw, so does that mean you aren’t going to comment on my blog?? hee hee. I hope you’ve gotten to the bottom of what’s gone awry with your neck. I have sciatica and hate it when that flares up. Screws things up big time!

I comment on a lot of blogs and get relatively few on my own. Luckily for me, I don’t really care about getting comments. :p
