Rehabing My Wardrobe

in Becoming Myself

A while back, I wrote about how I hate shopping. The money. The fitting rooms. The…having zero idea how to dress myself. I mean, really, even PANTS are a freaking mystery for me. And I mentioned, in passing, that I wanted a personal shopper to come and do it for me.

I was joking, but not. It was an idea that lodged itself into my brain and would not, could not, let go. I mean, the more I thought about it, the more I thought it was an awesome idea. As a gift to myself, bring someone in to show me how to dress, accessorize, and shop in ways that I CLEARLY was failing at–someone to help me look on the outside how I felt on the inside. So the idea grew, even though I had NO idea how I could make it happen. But I kept bringing it up, even despite myself.

I mentioned it to people in real life.

I mentioned it on Facebook.

I even mentioned it on Twitter (who are we kidding, I mention everything on Twitter).

And there, on Twitter, it became a possibility. Turns out, the lovely @coreenie_k had a friend who just might be able to help me out. She saw me tweet about needing a personal shopper/stylist, and BOOM. Next thing you know, I’m talking with Nancy Chapman of Inside Out, Wardrobe Rehab, and I’m thinking “is this really going to happen?” Sure enough, after some back and forth, we set up my first of 3 appointments.

Over the next 4 weeks, I’m going to be writing about my experience with Nancy over at the SDMomfia, but I’ll give you guys a little spoiler:

It was, without a doubt, one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself.

I have a totally different outlook on clothes, on dressing, and on ME than I did before this process, and I entirely credit Nancy for helping me to get there.

Look, I think we all know that the way many of us view clothes and shopping is tied up in how we view our bodies. But what Nancy really helped me to see was that THIS body–whatever THIS body is–is worth looking fabulous. This body is worth feeling good about. Clothes and accessories and feeling pretty are not the limited purview of women who love every single taut bit of their bodies. And dressing the body we have, to make it something that makes us feel stylish and full of swagger? That’s not just for the size zero’s in the world.

Nancy helped show me that, while helping me fill my closet. And I honestly can’t thank her enough.

Check out Inside Out, Wardrobe Rehab’s blog, follow on Twitter, or Like on Facebook for great tips and advice on everything from packing to skinny jeans!

Disclaimer: I was provided with a full service wardrobe rehab service in exchange for writing about my experience and providing marketing consulting for Inside Out Wardrobe Rehab. Y’all know me well enough by now to know that all opinions and words are my own. Nancy really was awesome, and if you’re in the LA/Orange County/San Diego areas, she can do amazing things for you!

Ugh. I hate buying bottoms of any kind. None seem to fit right, which is why I have a closet full of almost-fitting tops. Can’t wait to read about your shopping! You’re gonna be stylin’ at BlogHer!
