Parent teacher conferences

Today was parent teacher conference time with J’s teacher. We weren’t really worried about anything coming up in the conference that we weren’t already aware of, but we did want to see how the kid was doing, especially since he came into the class late, we had some hiccups in learning all the ins and outs of how this teacher does things, etc.

And, at least for me, I kind of wanted to see…well, let’s be frank. I wanted to see if he was doing well to validate our push to move him up.

We also wanted to see if one of the issues we face at home was something the teacher deals with, namely that my child unfortunately inherited from me the inclination to beat himself up if he’s not perfect at his schoolwork. At home, he will FAH-REAK out over making a mistake, or not doing it right. He expects to get it right, the first time, and every time, and if he doesn’t get it right the first time, he freaks out that he doesn’t know the answer. I feel for him because HOOOOO BOY that was me as a kid (uh, yeah. Just as a kid. Not as an adult of course. Sure. Yeah. That’s it.). It’s something we work on a lot at home, but we wanted to see if he did the same at school.

Turns out, no, that’s not something he does at school (thank goodness!). In addition to that, he’s doing excellent at his schoolwork, and his teacher told us details of what he’s doing and where she’s able to find ways to push him in areas he can use pushing. All good things, and I’m a proud mama. (And a relieved/slightly vindicated one that all the pushing we did of the district and the school seems to be validated.)

But I was especially happy to hear her say that he’s a sweet kid, who tries hard, gets along with the other kids, and who makes her smile and laugh every day. She mentioned more than once how much she enjoys having him in the class, and you know, the academics are awesome and it makes my little school loving heart pitter patter to see him doing so well at and enjoying that stuff, but it makes my mama heart just explode to hear his teacher talk about what a sweet kid he is.
