A few weeks ago, I got a box full of Mary Kay goodies from Influenster to test out. It was basically enough to do a full face:

There’s a cream eyeshadow (Apricot Twist), cream eyeliner (Jet Black), blush (Shy blush), bronzer (Light-Medium), translucent powder, mascara, lip gloss (Mango Tango), as well as a cream eyeshadow brush, a powder brush and a small angled eyeliner brush.

The cream eyeshadow was a little too yellow/peachy for my skin tone to use alone, so I added a dark brown from my Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette for some depth. When I did that, I REALLY liked it. It became this very lovely golden color that was a really nice way to brighten my eyes up. I wasn’t really a fan of the mascara, unfortunately. It had a very pokey brush that was uncomfortable to use, but mostly, it started flaking on me within the first hour of using it. Bummer.

The standout of the eyes though was the cream eyeliner. That stuff is SOFT, and a little goes a long way, but mostly, it was easy to use, and stayed put.

This quick swatch on my hand? Stuck around for a couple of hours, even after scrubbing it with soap and water. Once this stuff dries, it doesn’t really budge on me. I’m a fan.

I liked all the face products. The powder is finely milled, and goes on nicely. The bronzer isn’t too dark, though it does have a bit of shimmer, if you don’t like that sort of thing. I don’t like it for contour for me, but I do like it as an all over bronzer. It’s a nice subtle look, imo.

But the blush was the one I fell in love with. It’s become one of my most used blushes since I got it–it’s kind of like a more subtle NARS Orgasm or theBalm Hot Mama in color–it’s a pinky/coral with a bit of a golden shimmer. It also lasts really well on me. I have a problem with blushes migrating off my face after a few hours, but this one seems to last pretty much the whole day.  I’m really pleasantly surprised.

I was a smidge terrified of this lipgloss when I got it. It’s way more orange than this photo shows–mango is a pretty good descriptor for it. And when it’s put on thickly, it’s WAY too orange for my face/hair. BUT! When sheered out a bit?

It’s actually pretty nice. And for a gloss, the color lasts ok-ish on me (I don’t expect more than an hour or two from lipgloss, especially given how much I eat & drink throughout the day). It feels nice on too: not too sticky, not too slippery, not too tacky.

The finished look (my camera is terrible. It didn’t look this washed out in person). Not too shabby, which I will say honestly surprised me. I haven’t had a ton of luck with Mary Kay products in the last few years, so I’m thrilled to find some that worked for me.

I will say that the brushes were less lovely. The eyeliner brush I didn’t even photograph–it’s really small and fairly useless for my shaky skill level with cream liner (I need more to grab to steady my hand), though I might throw it in my travel makeup bag.

The cream eyeshadow/concealer brush was fine, if nothing terribly exciting. No complaints, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to track it down.

This brush though. This may be one of the worst brushes I’ve ever used. It’s so scratchy that it physically hurts my skin to use. I’ve tried washing it, conditioning it, washing it some more, conditioning it some more, and while it’s better, I still cringe when it touches my face. I will not be using this anymore, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Sadly.

So out of the 10 items Influenster sent me to try, 3 were total duds (powder brush, eyeliner brush, and mascara), 2 were ok (translucent powder and cream eyeshadow brush),  3 were pretty nice (bronzer, cream eyeshadow, & lip gloss), and 2 are now some of my favorites (cream eyeliner & blush). I’d say that’s a pretty decent outcome for a brand I haven’t had much luck with in the past few years! I was a little hesitant to try the Mary Kay products, but I must say, I was overall pleasantly surprised.

“I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.”

I’m currently using MK primer and foundation, which are fine but I probably won’t reorder when I finish them. My very favorite product though is their eye makeup remover. It’s fantastic, and I hunt down a MK consultant every time I run out bc I can’t even bother to use anything else now.

I had a few MK lipglosses and I really liked them. One was a creamy nude and the other was a glittery red. I forget the names, but they were lovely. And these look great on you.

I am still on the hunt for a foundation or BB Cream that’s a real keeper. The closest I ever came was Laura Mercier, but even that gave me meh results. Maybe it’s just me. :p

I think the final effect looks great. 🙂
