2014 To-Do List and Other Intentions

in Becoming Myself

You know, sometimes I wonder why I keep doing these goal lists, considering I never seem to come anywhere near completing them. But, I don’t know, I think it’s nice to give myself some things to shoot for that go beyond “lose weight” and “start working out.” I like to think that these are good to get me going on actually DOING things in my year, even if I don’t complete them all. So here we are again, at the start of a new year, with a new list.

And, once again, I’m adding a sort of theme, like I seem to do every year. I sort of failed at last year’s, but that’s actually helping to guide this year’s, which is:

Stop being lazy with life.

I don’t mean that I need to be hectic, hectic, busy, busy. Instead what I mean is that, like I said at the end of my year end recap, “Life will keep happening, whether you’re participating or not. If you want to get the most out of your own life, you need to be an active participant.”  So I need to participate. I want to stop being so lazy in my relationships. I want to stop being so lazy in my finances and grown up planning stuff. I want to stop being so lazy in the things I do for convenience and don’t do for…laziness. This life is the ONLY one I get here, so I want to stop being so damn lazy with it.

Hopefully the theme, and the following list, will help me with some of that.

  1. Take Jackson to Texas.
  2. Get my passport updated.
  3. Read at least 50 books.
  4. Update the backend of the blog, and maybe do a refresh of the front end.
  5. Get family photos done.
  6. Eat more vegetables.
  7. Take an honest to goodness family vacation.
  8. Go to PJ’s at TJ’s.
  9. Get a better handle on our finances, including our investment stuff, and do some long-term planning.
  10. Consolidate some of my social media nonsense.
  11. Revisit the tattoo idea.
  12. Be more active, in general and in a fitness sort of way.
  13. Go to The Blathering.
  14. Continue Bring Back the Words.
  15. See at least 4 movies in the theater.
  16. Deal with unbloggable work thing.
  17. Try to encourage some local friendships.
  18. Organize my RSS reader and stop reading blogs that I don’t enjoy anymore.
  19. Work on being a less lazy parent.
  20. Do something really fun for my 35th birthday.
  21. Find some ways to spread the blessings that my life offers to others.
  22. Tell people when I’m thinking of them, or when I’m proud of them, or the like.
  23. Try my hand at writing some longer-form stuff.
  24. Take more pictures with me in them.

(I may add to this list, because a few days ago I had some other good goals in mind, but they came to me in the car when I was driving and couldn’t do anything about it. And now I can’t remember them, because I have no memory anymore. And maybe the fact that I can’t remember means they weren’t great goals anyway. But if I remember, and I still think they’re good, I’m going to add them. Maybe. We’ll see).

So anyway, that’s the list. Here’s to 2014!

I LOVE that resolution. I think I’ve been trying to make the same one but didn’t quite know how to word it. There’s a lot of things that I’ve been putting off. It’s time to start DOING. Happy New Year!

YES on the whole first part of this. I just finished writing that I have been in survival mode all year and need to ENJOY my life. Happy 2014!

These are all great and, maybe more importantly, doable. A lot of them are things I should be doing, too. Especially encouraging local friendships!
