2013: A Year in Review

It’s time, once again, for Linda’s year in review questionnaire. Even though I’m sure I’m forgetting stuff, I love looking back on the year this way, and it’s a fun trip back down memory lane. So let’s see what happened this year!

And, if you are interested, 2012, 2011, 2010.

1. What did you do in 2013 that you’d never done before?

Went to a grown up pajama party. Took Jackson to see/play in snow. Visited Charleston with a bunch of awesome ladies. Saw Once on Broadway. Worked 70-80 hour weeks. Went red. Worked on an award winning app (that almost killed me at work). Posted every day for TWO DIFFERENT months. Got majorly, insanely, obsessively into makeup. Started a writing prompt link up. Tried to do some nice things on Twitter. Took Jackson to Disneyland. Sprained my ankle & then had to get a stupid walking boot. Got food poisoning. Finished all my Christmas shopping that had to be mailed by the first week in December.

2. Did you keep your New Year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I sadly kind of failed at my goals for 2013. Wompwompwooooommmmp. But yes, I’ll make more for next year–I’m posting them tomorrow, but I’m actually pretty excited.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Family and lots of internet friends.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

I’m blessed to say no.

5. What places did you visit?

New York, Phoenix, Charleston, LA (I know, it doesn’t really count. But we spent the night, so I’m counting it).

6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?

Focus. Motivation. More $$. Better balance at work.

7. What dates from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

Again, the actual dates I probably (mostly) won’t remember, because I’m terrible about dates, but: the Boston Marathon bombing, PJ’s at TJ’s, seeing Once with Jennie, the Blathering, taking J to Disneyland for the first time, N.C’s solo show in November.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Not quitting my job this spring in the midst of all the craziness.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Oh man, there are so many. I feel like I was a failure in a lot of ways this year: I wasn’t the greatest mom in Jackson’s tough 4 year old transition, I wasn’t the greatest wife, I wasn’t the greatest daughter, or friend, or granddaughter, or…well, the list goes on.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Some nasty colds, sprained my ankle, sprained my wrist, got food poisoning, and got croup (I still can’t believe I got croup). But, even though that all sucked, it was all pretty minor, which I am grateful for.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Makeup. A new king size bed. My ticket to PJ’s. A timeshare. My ticket to The Blathering. Disneyland passes.

12. Where did most of your money go?

The usual day to day life stuff: rent, preschool, gas, bills. We also added in some ongoing expenses with things like Disneyland passes & the timeshare toward the end of the year. And, personally, I spent all my money on makeup and beauty stuff. Duh.

13. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Makeup. Blogging gatherings. Taking J to Disney. Being well at Christmas.

14. What song will always remind you of 2013?

Get Lucky by Daft Punk, Can’t Hold Us by Macklemore, and Jackson’s most sung song of the year Safe and Sound by Capital Cities.

15. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? About the same, which I’ll take.
b) thinner or fatter? Oh, definitely fatter. This was the year I got LAZY in my health.
c) richer or poorer? Probably a little cash poorer, but only a little.

16. What do you wish you’d done more of?

So much, actually. I wish I’d been less lazy in many aspects of my life.

17. What do you wish you’d done less of?

I wish I’d spent less time stressing.

18. How did you spend Christmas this year?

At home, with Jackson & N.C. We were still recovering from being sick, so it was a quiet, mellow day, and it was mostly perfect.

19. What was your favorite TV program?

Game of Thrones. Orange is the New Black. Mad Men. Walking Dead. Revenge. Scandal. The Blacklist. And even though we just started it less than a week ago, I’m 30 episodes into Breaking Bad and it’s definitely on this list.

20. What were your favorite books of the year?

Fangirl. Daughter of Smoke & Bone/Days of Blood and Starlight. Looking for Alaska. Fire. Reality Boy.

21. What was your favorite music of the year?

I had a major love affair with everything Top 40 this year, which is CRAZY weird for me.

22. What were your favorite films of this year?

Catching Fire. Gravity. Iron Man 3. World War Z (although man we had crappy seats for the shaky cam. Holy nausea batman). Skyfall. Pitch Perfect.

23. What did you do for your birthday in 2013, and how old were you?

I turned 34, and took the day off work. I went and did a Segway tour of Mission Bay with N.C., and then he put together a picnic for us in Del Mar overlooking the ocean. Then we puttered around the rest of the day. It was lovely.

24.What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Honestly, I think I could have made my year more satisfying by trying more. I feel like I was lazy in a LOT of my life, and looking back on the year, I feel like I let things slip away from me that in retrospect would have made for a better year if I hadn’t. Not that I had a bad year, far from it, but I feel like *I* wasn’t at my best, and am sort of looking back with a bit of regret on the things I let slide by.

25. What kept you sane?

My husband. Getting “cuzzled” with Jackson (cozy + snuggled, in my favorite word he’s made up). Pocket friends on Twitter, and text, and messaging. Spending time primping. TV marathons and movie outings and curling up with a good book. Saying no to putting my work email on my personal phone. Taking breaks to write.

26. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013.

Life will keep happening, whether you’re participating or not. If you want to get the most out of your own life, you need to be an active participant.
