Ways the Walking Boot Sucks

in I'm a Disaster

Look, I promise this isn’t going to become the “wah my ankle” blog, but seriously, this thing sucks. Better than crutches, yes, but still not great. Why? Let me show you:

  • I’ve had the stupid thing for 1.5 days, and my back & hips already hurt like crazy because of the height issue. Because the boot makes one leg 3-4 inches taller than the other. Wearing my biggest, clunkiest tennis shoes makes the difference more like 1-2 inches, but still: I’m completely freaking lopsided.
  • Because I am so lopsided when I walk, I basically have to wear shoe around the house if I’m not going to just go from like, the chair to the bathroom and back. No, if I’m going to be up and doing things like making dinner, dealing with the kid, etc., I have to wear the boot, which means I have to wear the shoe. I *hate* wearing shoes around the house. Especially tennis shoes. I am seriously looking at trying to find some platform slippers or something.
  • Somehow immobilizing my ankle has made it swell MORE. This doesn’t make any kind of logical sense to me.
  • It’s freaking LOUD. Ok, in our house, our living room/kitchen/dining room is upstairs and our bedrooms are downstairs. And the upstairs is all wood laminate, so footsteps can be kind of loud anyway. But the boot? It’s like every horrible upstairs neighbor I’ve ever had rolled all into one stupid boot.
  • It’s heavy by the end of the day.
  • It’s sweaty.
  • It hurts the back of my calf.
  • It’s really freaking annoying. Better than crutches, yes, but still annoying.

I’m sure I’ll get used to all this nonsense (except maybe the lopsided thing, because really, it’s not a small difference), but for right now? The boot just sucks.

Bah. I hope it’s the two weeks and not the six.

UGHHHH I am so irritated on your behalf. I am stuck in the “wear supportive shoes even while lounging” camp right now, and for the foreseeable future, and it makes me SO EFFING CRANKY. Also, Eliza has taken to asking me to remove my shoes and pitching a FIT when I don’t comply, which makes the whole mess even more awesome.

Ankles, why you gotta be so terrible and annoying? I hope yours heals fast, dude.

OMG!! I spent 6 weeks in one of this summer!! SUUUUUCKED. I had a stress fracture. All the things you said, totally true. My hips & knees ached for days at first. And the wearing another shoe all the time?? UGH. Eventually you’ll get used to it. I had to wear mine on vacation & by then it was pretty old news so it wasn’t awful. Just… sweaty :/ I hope it goes fast for you. Stupid boot!!
