Seriously Come On Self

in I'm a Disaster

So, on Sunday we were getting dinner at In-N-Out, and as we were walking in, I somehow managed to step off a half-inch of curb (like where a sidewalk slopes into a driveway? Yeah, like that), and completely bite it. I felt my ankle rolling, and tried to stop myself, but I was not successful. I ended up on the ground with a slightly sore wrist from where I caught myself and a slightly sore ankle.

N.C. was very much like “Uh, why are you on the ground?”

I’m still not entirely sure to be totally honest.

Anyway, we went about our evening having dinner, and despite the embarrassment, all was mostly well. My wrist and ankle were both a little achy, but I figured no big deal.

And it isn’t, not really. I’m not, like, incapacitated or anything. But I’m definitely not great. My wrist has been sore all week. And my ankle? Yeah I’m pretty sure it’s sprained. I think I exacerbated it at some point during the week going up or down the stairs with the kid, and now it hurts and is swollen in this one specific little spot, and oh let me tell you how fun that is in a house with 1)stairs and 2)a four year old.

Look, crap happens—I hurt myself a fair amount, and in really dumb ways—but this seems extra annoyingly dumb. And I’m fine, I’ll be fine. But still. Seriously. HALF AN INCH of curb. Half an inch of curb. I keep shaking my head at myself, because COME ON SELF.

I’m so sorry! Have you gone to the doctor?

And don’t beat yourself up. One of my friends tripped on her own steps and broke her wrist in the fall. She said that as she watched her wrist bend the wrong way, she thought, “Oh, that’s not good.”

Bah, stupid injuries just feel so … stupid. Don’t they?

Once I was walking through a parking lot and stepped over one of those concrete bumpers that stop your car from going to the curb, and I didn’t lift my foot high enough and I bit the asphalt WITH MY FACE. Stupid injuries are stupid.

“Come on, Self!!” The battle cry of the chronically clumsy. I have seriously stepped wrong getting out of bed and fallen down. I feel your pain.

I worked in the Operating Room for many years. No one who was having a broken ankle fixed ever had a good story. It was always a little trip, a little curb, slipping out of a high heel, etc. Just the nature of ankle injuries….it gives you a pretty significant and long healing problem with an embarrassing story. Hope your ankle heals quickly!

Did the same thing on a 1/2 inch curb. Looked like an egg under the skin of my ankle. Tore the ligaments and wore a soft cast for couple if months. Weak and tender for almost a year. Maybe not just a silly fall. Take care G.
