The Little Mermaid: A Giveaway & Some Musings

by Ginger on September 19, 2013

in Entertain Me

There were three Disney movies that came out when I was between 10 & 13 that loom large in my mind: The Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, and Aladdin. To me, I see those movies and I am IN my childhood, though they obviously weren’t my most formative years. I can recite every lyric of the songs, and almost every word of dialog. They are ingrained in me.

As an adult, I know too that The Little Mermaid was the movie that marked the start of what is called the Disney Renaissance, so it’s no surprise that these movies are so much a part of my memories of growing up. They became cultural juggernauts. But more personally, they came out as I was entering my tween years, starting to recognize romance, starting to see the possibility of putting myself in the girl/boy pairings. I didn’t want to be the princesses (although, man, did I want their hair), but like the books I disappeared into, they offered a glimpse of a world where girls and boys kissed and held hands and fell in love. They also showed me that sometimes the girl could help the boy, and that she wasn’t always a helpless little thing. They were an escape, but also that hint of growing up in a package that was easy to handle.

I’m excited that The Little Mermaid is coming out of the (dreaded) Disney vault, not only because I’m a loon who wants to own every animated Disney movie I’ve ever seen but also because having these movies is like revisiting the me of 20+ years ago & remembering what it was like to be a girl wondering whether a boy would ever like her or when she’d get her first kiss or whether she’d ever have the courage to go after the things she wanted.

Plus, it’s always a good time to ogle Ariel’s hair.

Sha la la la la la I’ll be so sad, if I don’t win this disc because….

I tried. I failed. But for real. I love this movie’s music, and Mulan’s music, and the music from Hercules.

Does “The Nightmare Before Christmas” count? If not, it should.

Ooooh, The Little Mermaid is my all-time favorite Disney movie! The music! The romance! The dreamy lagoon boat ride that every time I watched i thought “Maybe this time they’ll get to kiss….NOOOOOO! Stupid Flotsam and Jestam!”

The Little Mermaid was my FAVORITE as a kid. I still quite enjoy the movie, but I love the music from Princess and the Frog and Tangled best. And I’m quite familiar with Disney music because we often have family singalongs in the car to all the soundtracks. 🙂

The Little Mermaid has always been my favorite! Beauty & The Beast was my sister’s favorite and Aladdin was my other sister’s favorite:)

Little mermaid is my favorite one for the music. Disney now has the Under the Sea Journey ride which does all the music and I love it. Thankfully the boys are pretty into it too, but I’d love them to see the movie too.

I’ve always loved the songs from Aladdin.

The Lion King! When The Circle Of Life begins to play I get chills.

Little Mermaid or Aladdin

Oh please yes please!

We sang The Little Mermaid songs in choir in 7th grade so that’s the one I hold with me!

I think my favorite Disney music might be from The Jungle Book, although it’s not my favorite movie.

That said, when I saw “Snow White” in the theaters a couple of decades ago, I was really struck by how amazing “Heigh Ho” is.

Trying to pick a favorite Disney movie (or movie music) is really tough! I love so many of the ones listed here, and others. My kids listen to all the music all the time, so I hear it a LOT! That said…I think I most love the music from Tangled. Hercules is pretty great too. But again, they’re all amazing.

Beauty and the Beast has my favorite music.

Sometimes I’ll watch the credits of my favorite Disney movies just for the songs. Music-wise Hercules is my favorite, but Little Mermaid is a close second.

AJ September 21, 2013 at 12:18 am

My favorites are also the three you mentioned! But if I had to choose one, probably Beauty and the Beast. 🙂

Ashley Rexrode September 21, 2013 at 10:34 am

I love the music from beauty and the beast

Jemima P September 22, 2013 at 1:23 pm

I think The Little Mermaid might have my favorite music…although Beauty and the Beast is up there too

I was a bit older than you when these came out, but YES, still a defining part of my childhood. I was just singing my son “Part of your world” and went to find the CD and realized (horror!) I DID NOT HAVE IT. I must’ve had the tape? Aladdin was my favorite of those 3, though, because Princess Jasmine kinda sorta (but not really) looked like me in terms of skin tone/hair color. I spent most my teen years searching for my Aladdin…

Andrew P September 23, 2013 at 4:24 pm

Aladdin has my favourite songs!

Olivia L September 23, 2013 at 11:51 pm

I love the songs in Little Mermaid and The Lion King! They both have a lot of memories for me.

I love the songs in Beauty and the Beast

Clarissa Hooper September 24, 2013 at 5:40 pm

I think every Disney movie has a classic song that I love belting out! They are great 🙂

June Lisle September 24, 2013 at 6:28 pm

It’s really hard to choose the best animated movie with the best music. Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Lion King, and more. I loved the music in Anastasia but that isn’t a Disney movie.
