Simple Pleasures

Today was a good day, a much needed good day. It was a good day with my kid, with my husband, heck, with me.

I’ve been in a bit of a funk the last couple of weeks, for a lot of reasons that mostly pretty much boil down to “hey, guess what? LIFE.” But still, it’s no fun being in that sort of low-level blah all the time, not for me, or for the people around me. Add to my funk an almost-four-year-old who is pushing every boundary and struggling to manage his emotions on every.little.thing., and a husband who is crazy busy, and, well, it’s not been loads of fun around here.

But today. Today was just…nice. It was just a nice summer Saturday. Everyone slept until 8 (sadly, this is sleeping in these days), then after puttering around we went to get donuts. After we had donuts, we went to a little park that just happens to be right by the train tracks, which basically means Jackson is in heaven–play on the playground AND watch trains go by? He couldn’t have been more thrilled. In the afternoon, while the kid napped had quiet time, N.C. and I enjoyed a simple lunch together. When Jackson got up, he & N.C. played puzzles while I did some cleaning (the animals have freaking FLEAS. We’re doing lots of cleaning. That part wasn’t so fun), and when I was done, we headed to the pool where the three of us played and swam (you guys, my kid swims now. It’s not pretty, but it happens. Man he’s getting so big) for a couple of hours. Jackson only had a couple of tantrums all day, and they were manageable. It was a calm, drama-free, enjoyable time. It just…it was a nice day. It wasn’t anything super special, but it was just what I needed.

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that can make you happy.
