Clearing Away the Bathroom Clutter

in Home is Where the Heart Is

I’m going to show you something really disturbing. Just prepare yourselves.

This (terrible terrible) photo shows you the sad, scary state of my bathroom vanity area. I’d hang my head in shame at how terrible it is, but I’m beyond embarrassment at this point.

So the thing about our bathroom is that there are two small, skinny drawers (you can see mine up there) and holy crow is that not enough space for all the girly stuff I’ve been getting into lately. A giant chunk of my makeup goes on the blue framed organizer that you can see the corner of up there, but some things don’t fit or don’t have a good place to put a magnet or are too heavy for the magnetic treatment. There are lotions and face creams, nail polishes and cuticle oils, hair dryers and flat irons, combs and brushes, etc. etc. You get the picture. There’s just…more stuff than there is a place to put it.

SO.

One of my goals for this year was to find some way to organize this disaster area. It was driving my husband nuts, and it got to the point of driving me nuts. PLUS, I kept losing stuff in that black hole of STUFF. I knew I needed more drawer type things, places to store stuff that wasn’t OUT.

LOOK! IT’S MAGIC! (otherwise known as storage). (pay no attention to the ridiculous blogger trying to stay out of the picture in the mirror).(or the terrible photo).(or my obsession with parenthesis)

I looked for a while for a more “grown-up” solution–I had a vision of a wooden cabinet of some kind I think. But this space is slightly odd–it’s not quite a standard furniture size, so everything I could find was either 4 inches too big in any given direction or 8 inches too small, or not enough drawers, blah blah blah. So fine, I caved and bought the stuff I had seen at Target eons ago.

This is one of the drawers. No, I don’t have a lip stuff addiction, why do you ask? (I don’t even know what some of that stuff is. It’s been LOST, so it’s like I have all this new stuff to play with!)

These are another two drawers. They are (not so slowly) filling up with nail goodies. I sometimes don’t know why, when every manicure I get chips within a day or two, but that’s sort of besides the point. The point is all that stuff needed a place to live, and I finally found everything a home. The other, bigger drawers have my hair dryer, flat iron, hair goodies, contacts, and other larger bottles of lotions and potions. And now, my counter top stays mostly free of clutter, I actually can find things, and I’m using all my goodies! Win/win/win.

So. Now I’ve organized my makeup, my jewelry, and all my girly goodies. I think that means that…shoes are next on the list. Dun dun DUNNNNN. (I do about one of these a year. So shoes’ll wait till 2014 I’m thinking).

I’m jealous of the drawers! They’re so pretty and organized.

I have to say, the after shot completely redeems the before shot 🙂 Nice job. I love those drawer organizer thingies. But then again, I’m a neat freak!

I like the funkier drawers/bins. You should totally do shoes next, and soon. Finally ready to turn my “OK closet” into my “dream closet” and would love to shamelessly steal your ideas.

One of the good things about moving is getting rid of beauty products that I tried, didn’t like, and will never use again. Friends that want to try them get them, or those that I haven’t even tried get donated. Thus my girly drawer is very small (my husband needs to realize how good he has it!).

I love seeing photos like that to know I’m not the only one that does that… but wow, impressive on the organizing.. I need to go through and organize the bathroom again ;0

My god, that’s fantastic! My own clusterfucked bathroom is dripping with envy. (Or maybe that’s a leaky faucet… nope, it’s envy.)

When I get to that point, I find that trashing half my stash works wonders!

I’m an organizing nut, so when I saw the first picture, I wanted to come to your house and fix it all:-) Although, not my exact method (eye-roll), I like your containers and I’m so glad you got yourself organized. The important thing is that you are happy with the results! If you decide you need help with your shoes, I’m here:-)
