Happy Merry Peaceful Joy

in Celebrations

Well, despite some last minute hassle, we completely enjoyed our Christmas. The boy was enthralled, the adults were amused, and everyone got lovely things (I may have had the girliest Christmas of my life, since the bulk of my gifts were comprised of makeup and nail polish. YAY!). And, of course, we ate ourselves into new pant sizes. All in all, a good holiday was had by all.

There was this nice moment on Christmas morning that I keep replaying. Jackson was slowly making his way through his (giant) pile of presents, a process that he was enjoying but that was also overwhelming him a bit. He was having fun, don’t get me wrong, but every once in a while he’d sort of stop the cycle of open/show off/play/open/show off/play and wander back to something small he’d opened earlier–animal crackers from his stocking, a small wind up snowman, etc. I mean, it IS a lot of stimulation, you know?

Anyway, at this one moment, J stopped paying attention to the pile of presents he still had to open, and came over to me. He had his little bag of animal crackers, and he just climbed up into my lap and…sat. He quietly ate some of his little snack, and just looked around while curled up against me. It was a nice private little moment with me and the little man in the middle of the happy chaos of the morning.

There were lots of nice little moments like that through Christmas, that helped to contribute to the overall feeling of contentment and peace that comes from celebrating the holidays with people you love. And even though there were moments that made me want to pull my hair out (I don’t personally recommend that you ever deal with the Walmart parking lot or Honey Baked Ham at all on Christmas eve), the moments of happiness and joy totally overshadowed them.
