They Were Clean Yesterday

in Day in the Life

Yesterday, I went on a cleaning tear.

Now, if you know me, you’ll know that particular statement is…out of character for me. HAHAHAHA, that’s kind of an understatement. I HATE cleaning, and will find basically ANYTHING to do before cleaning. Laundry, no problem. Dishes, not an issue. The damn floors??? I fraking hate the floors. Bathrooms? Ugh.

So to say that I spent a good chunk of my day cleaning bathtubs, toilets, sinks, mirrors, floors, counters, stairs, & even reorganizing part of the pantry? IS WEIRD.

But that’s what I did. I was like some weird version of myself: “Must. Clean. All. This. Nonsense!” I don’t know if it’s because N.C. wasn’t home, or if it was because I wanted to feel like I was doing my share before I left for The Blathering this week, or if it just finally got to the point that it bugged me, but I felt compelled to clean.

I actually had plans to do more today, in fact, until I…uh, woke up. First of all, DST combined with staying up too late had me dragging most of the day. Second, all the work I did yesterday was extremely apparent in that I feel slightly like I was beaten with several sticks. Dude, all that bending down and standing up and bending over and vigorously scrubbing bathtubs is kinda a work out. Who knew?

Of course, some of it could also be attributed to the fact that I woke up this morning and my floors look like they were NOT swept or mopped yesterday. That’s not demoralizing or anything.

Damn dog hair.

This is why I don’t clean! I clean the kitchen because I just can’t function in a messy kitchen. And my standards for clean are…low. But it IS demoralizing when all your hard work isn’t even evident twelve hours later.

Don’t even get me started on the bathrooms. I let those go embarrassingly long before forced to clean them.

I haaaaaate how quickly things go back to looking like you did nothing.

I’ve been strongly considering a Roomba. We have two cats and within half an hour of cleaning the floors I’m already noticing little furballs floating around. Just not sure I can justify $500 for a tiny vacuum cleaner.

I feel you on the dog hair! We have a husky and on a good day she makes the house look un-vacuumed a few hours after you’ve done all sorts of hard work. She’s currently shedding her summer coat, which means that she messes up my floors as I’m working on them. :p We try to furminate her, but it’s a bit like bailing out in the middle of the ocean.

I just started using the daily cleaning checklist from Apartment Therapy and I’m liking the results. You clean something different for 20 minutes a day and it keeps the mess under some sort of control. A few things repeat over the course of the month (bathrooms, living room, etc) but there’s also one-time events like cleaning off knobs and handles, stuff like that.

Dogs will do that! Our surfaces get cluttered SO quickly and I get so aggravated!
