Book Publishing Revisited

by Ginger on November 15, 2011

in Inside Book Publishing, The 9-5

I haven’t written about book publishing in a while.  A long while. Ok, it’s been like six months or something.

It’s not for lack of trying. But the problem I’ve run into is that a lot of what people have asked me  about (ebooks &  self-publishing in particular) seem to be moving targets. So I’ll start a post and then something will change, and I think “I can’t write about this until things settle down.” But the reality is, the industry is in a state of flux, and probably will be for a while, so if I’m going to attempt to write about the stuff you guys are interested in, I just need to do it–with the caveat that the industry is in a state of flux.

So. This is your warning that I’m going to have some more publishing posts coming up soon. If you have specific questions, drop ’em in the comments and I PROMISE, this time I’ll answer them (to the best of my ability)! I’m also planning on going back and answering the questions from some of my old posts too, finally.

Bring on the industry speak? Yes.

Ooh, you’re in publishing? Very cool (well, or not, if you hate it). I would LOVE to know how the industry decides what’s going to be big before anyone reads it (like throwing so much weight behind, say, John Green instead of E. Lockhart, or Twilight as opposed to). I recently read How To Become A Famous Novelist and it had my interest piqued as to whether editors really know what will be big or if it’s all just a silly crapshoot like he said.

Yeah! You know I love you anyway but especially love hearing your thoughts about the industry. I’m not sure if I have questions but I’ll let you know if I come up with any. I’m still on the fence about whether to even attempt traditional publishing. I wish there was a clear answer!

I love this! Always love hearing from other publishing folk. I rarely post anything too specific about work on my personal blog- not sure most people who read mine are as into books as I am 🙂

I find the impact of self-publishing fascinating, so I’d love to hear what you think about that. Mostly from a “gee, this new economy thing is weird, isn’t it?” standpoint (a la my recent weekend reading post on the topic). I’m not actually thinking of trying to self-publish my way to fame and fortune.
