Wandering Through My Birthday

in Celebrations

This weekend, we celebrated my birthday (the actual day was Friday, but any day where you have to spend more time with budget spreadsheets than birthday cakes isn’t a day to celebrate on in my opinion). One of my to-do’s for the year was to celebrate my birthday with something OTHER than dinner and a movie–wonderful for date nights, but I wanted something a little different.

We tried to throw together a BBQ, but the last minute nature of our planning (as usual) meant that most everyone was already booked for the weekend. So instead, we had one friend over and grilled for just the three of us. Bratwurst, grilled corn (w/lime & cilantro), and beer made a great, relaxing lunch (hooray for naptime meals!). And everyone knows that calories consumed in a birthday celebration don’t count, right?

After that, we had a babysitter come to manage the kiddo for the remainder of the afternoon and N.C. and I set out for the main event: wandering.

Here’s the thing. N.C. and I are world class wanderers. Despite both being planners and schedulers, over the course of our 11ish years together we’ve done some fantabulous wandering. We’ve explored parts of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vegas, San Francisco, Tucson, Phoenix, Savannah, Mexico, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Texas together. We’ve wandered our way into cool shops, funky stores, weird galleries, and more. It’s actually one of my favorite ways to spend time with my husband, holding hands and meandering through a neighborhood, stopping where our whims take us.

You can imagine how much we’ve been able to do that with the kid.

So that’s what we did for my birthday. We got a babysitter for 3 hours, and we drove down the coast and stopped when we saw a cool little area we wanted to explore more. And then we…wandered. We found a couple of cool shops. We had a few pieces of gourmet chocolate. We found some restaurants we want to try. We stopped for a cocktail and an appetizer.

Lemondrop martini & sliders

It was no weekend in Vegas (maybe next year), but I still enjoyed myself, and got to do something that I miss, a lot. I got to spend time holding hands with my husband, walking in a leisurely way, checking out shops that had breakables in them, and relaxing. I think that makes for a good way to celebrate my birthday!

P.S. Jackson, for his part, decided to gift me with his cold on Sunday. Thanks kid, just what I wanted–let’s work on your gift giving chops, mkay?

Sounds lovely! Some kid-free wandering time sounds like the perfect birthday.

That sounds delightful. We savor our wanders too, but they’re few and far between these days.

Happy belated birthday!

That sounds like an absolutely wonderful day. Wandering with no time frame, no nagging toddler and no nap time constrictions is the perfect kind of day. So happy you enjoyed your birthday celebration!

Blissful.

Except for the cold part, which I am hoping you’re over by now. *summer cold fistbump*
