Say Yes More

in Becoming Myself

Things have been crazy around here lately, both on a personal and professional level. This past week was incredibly stressful, so when I had the opportunity to go out for some good food and good conversation on Thursday, I jumped at the chance. There was a small event for some local bloggers, and despite a few nerves, I knew it was exactly what I needed.

One of the things on my 2011 To-Do List is to say “Yes” instead of “no” or “I can’t” to more social events, even when it makes me uncomfortable. I’m trying to RSVP yes right away instead of turning invitations over and over in my head (usually a sure way to get me to say no). I’m trying to just…say yes. And I have to say, it’s one of those things that I’m finding is getting easier the more I do it, and, like in the case of Thursday, the benefits are proving to be more than worth a few butterflies.

For a few hours that night, I was able to put away work and family stresses and instead talk with some fun and fabulous women about everything from labor to blogging to marketing to the challenges of finding work that challenges and interests you to blogging to food and beyond (yes there was lots of talk of blogging–what do you expect with a bunch of bloggers?). Yes, I had some great food and drinks, and yes I was there in part to network, but screw networking. I got to just have fun, with some great company, for almost 5 hours. I would relive those 5 hours any day, it was that much fun (and that good for my stress level!) All because I said yes.

Of course, getting things loosened up with a signature cocktail that is so smooth you barely taste alcohol doesn't hurt either.

It’s been a really long time since I’ve had such a fun and personally fulfilling night, and it made me even more aware of the need to say yes, to out myself out there, to stop taking the “easy” way so much. Life is much more interesting when you put yourself out there.

Sounds like a good night! I think we moms tend to stay home too much. I know I do- it is hard to leave the toddler, who is still in a clingy place. I know it gets easier, though, since the 4 year old usually waves me good bye with great exuberance.

I get out for book club once a month, but not much more than that. I should work on that.

I had so much fun chatting with and getting to know you. So glad you said “yes” and I hope to see you at more events!
