Some of my favorite non-conversational uses of Twitter

So we all know I’m a huge fan of Twitter. And I’ve even written a few times about my favorite microsite: 5 ways to NOT annoy people on Twitter & 7 awesome things you do on Twitter. Well, today I’m going to add to that list with my favorite non-conversational uses of Twitter. These are some of my favorite ways to use the site, that don’t have to do with chatting with everyone (which is, by far, my #1 favorite thing). Without further ado:

  1. As a bookmarking tool. For the longest time, I didn’t really have a great use for the “favorite” option. I’d occasionally favorite a super witty tweet (and still do, on occasion), but by and large it went unused. That is, until I started to use it as a bookmark.
Now, whenever I see a link that I want to read later–whether because I’m on my phone, or at work, or running to catch Jackson before he gets into the cat food, I favorite it for later, creating my very own page of bookmarks that I can go back and peruse at a later time–it doesn’t get lost in the stream, and I don’t feel rushed to read.
  2. Traffic & weather. I follow a few local news entities specifically so that I can get updates on what’s going on locally. But specifically, I like these for traffic & weather updates. I tend to check Twitter on my phone right before I leave for work in the morning just to make sure that there are no major traffic snarls to watch out for.
Yes, yes, I can check the traffic in other ways, but honestly, this is the FASTEST. The local news tweets are far and away the quickest updates I can find.
  3. Quickly reading via my lists. For the longest time, I didn’t do lists on Twitter, for much the same reason I rarely participate in #FollowFriday–I was afraid I’d leave someone out, hurt someone’s feelings, or miscategorize someone. But THEN, I figured out I could do private lists. You guys, private lists are my saving grace some days. Now, most of the time, I read my ENTIRE stream all at once (and, like a weirdo, I mostly use the web based Twitter, and I actually LIKE new Twitter. I know, I know. shocking). But when time is of the essence, I can pull up one of my lists and skim that way. I have different lists for different things–one just for brands (that one’s public), one just for locals, one for moms, one for dads, one for shopping/deals, etc. This way, if I’m looking for something specific out of my Twitter time, I don’t waste it down the rabbit hole–you know what I mean, you go online for one reason, and 30 minutes later you’re wondering “what was I doing?” as you stare at a feed you have no idea how you got to. Or maybe that’s just me.

So what about you? Do you have any favorite ways to use Twitter?

As always, you can find more lists every Monday over at ABDPBT!

My favorites are all (mostly) things that make me laugh. So I look at them when I need to feel happy. 🙂

Also, it’s pretty much my Google Reader now.

My favorite list is “People who don’t follow me.” I need to update it to get follow backs 😉

Ooh, the favoriting as a means of bookmarking is a really good tip! I will definitely start doing that.

Bookmarking! How have used Twitter for so long and NOT have used this idea?! Brilliant!

I should use lists. I like using the new twitter too, except that it has recently started doing the same thing as the old twitter – only giving me the last 45 minutes of status updates. So if I haven’t been there since yesterday, all the stuff that’s happened (I know, nothing has happened, but) I can’t access. Maybe it’s a matter of logging out and in again, but I bet if I had lists, I’d see everything in the stream.

Maybe when I get the next cold or flu bug I’ll spend some quality time making lists.

I should use lists too. I follow too many people to keep up with the stream, especially on days when I’m at work and can’t check it for hours at a time.

Personally, my favorite use of twitter right now is a place to bitch about pumping!
