A lovely role model

Today we mark the inauguration of our 44th President, Barack Obama. And with him, we welcome his two children and his lovely wife Michelle as well. And can I just say how much I love the new First Lady?

Michelle Obama is the kind of woman who can be a role model to young women (and not so young women!) in this country and others. She’s got style, she’s got class, she’s got sass, she’s got sophistication, she’s got intelligence.

I love that she and President Obama show affection for each other. You can tell they enjoy each other’s company, and that their marriage is one of partnership. You can tell that they like to joke with each other. You can tell that they consult each other. Seeing such a strong marriage, in or out of the White House, is always good to witness.

I love that she looks just as comfortable in high end designers as she does in J.Crew (how adorable were Sasha and Malia’s crewcuts coats today?). I love that she appears comfortable in her own skin no matter what she’s wearing–something that more women should learn (myself included)! I’m always wary of the constant harping on what the First Lady wears (because seriously, she’s more than just a hanger!), but I’m kind of jealous of Michelle Obama’s style–I could take some pointers from her.

Mostly, though, I love that she’s a spunky, intelligent woman of her own right. Yes, her husband is now the President of the United States. Yes, she has put her career on hold for his. But I get the sense that she’s not putting her brain on hold for 4 (or 8 ? ) years while he does his thing. I’m not sure what role she’ll play as First Lady, but whether she choses the Hillary Clinton route or the more subdued Laura Bush route, I don’t have a doubt in my mind that her intellect will play a role in this White House.

Sometimes in the world we live in, I find a hard time finding female role models who I would aspire to be like. That’s not to say they aren’t there, but I do find it difficult. But, honestly, I feel like I can look up to Michelle Obama. As a wife, as a mother, as a woman.

I just twittered the same thing: I can’t even wrap my head around the amount of pride she must feel for her husband!

I was so moved today by what I saw. I love Michelle Obama and their kids. She is such a great role model and a true Jackie Kennedy model. Love her.
