Top 5 ways this weekend proved I’m not 19 anymore

So, since this past weekend was homecoming at the University of Arizona, I got to see some old friends, relive some old memories and revisit some old haunts. I also got to be surrounded by a lot of folks in the 18-21 age bracket, and dude, I am sooooo not 19 anymore.

I’ve never been a huge partier (well, one year in college, but even then it was pretty tame by some standards), but this weekend just reinforced that fact to the nth degree. Here, let me show you what I mean:

  1. Rather than stay out all night Friday at the bars of our youth, we hit up one friend’s house, had a few of his microbrews (which were great) and were done and in bed by midnight.
  2. Saturday we attended the marching band’s morning rehearsal. During college, these mornings were an annoying part of game days, but we were able to handle 4 hours in the Tucson sun, working our tails off. This weekend? Not so much. I was wishing for AC or at least some shade and a place to sit after about an hour. And we were mostly just standing around.
  3. After the morning rehearsal, we all kind of wanted a nap. At noon.
  4. Tailgating consisted of more than just burgers and hot dogs (though those did have a place). There was homemade salsa, chili made with shredded beef, enchiladas, hummus, cupcakes, lemon bars, polish sausage, brownies…the list went on. But the biggest sign? There were veggies at every tent we frequented.
  5. We drank our fair share during tailgating. Then we went to the game (we lost, boo). And then? We went back to where we were staying and went to bed. Yup, we were in bed just after midnight. Leaving campus we went past a lot of our old post-game haunts, and we thought about it for about…a minute. And then we all went…dude, I’m WIPED OUT.

These were just a few of the indicators I came across this weekend. And you know what? I’m ok with it. I loved being 19–but I’m pretty cool with being 29. Early bedtime and all.

I feel you. We went to an awesome Halloween party, and we were ready to leave at 1am. Things were in full swing, but we were not. I was tucked in bed by 2. I tell myself it’s about quality of partying, not duration.

It’s nice to have a weekend where you’re reminded that you’re not 19 anymore and feel actually okay with your real age. Not that it isn’t fun to revisit old times 🙂

I feel ya there! No halloween party for us, we’re just going to hand out candy and hopefully get to bed early. How lame are we?

I think that when you start taking naps again you know you’ve matured. 🙂
